The story behind the stores Systur & Makar (translates to sisters and partners) began at a craft fair held in the north of the country (just outside of Akureyri).
We took part together for 4 years and combined our two brands into one cohesive booth or "pop up, 4 day store".
The style and the set-up of the booth changed year by year, as you can see from the photos here below, but we finally found a style that we have more or less kept in our stores today. Anyway, back to the story...
After last fair, the year 2014, we went to a dinner at one of our favourite restaurants in Akureyri called Rub23, got some sushi and white wine, cheered and celebrated! And we thought it would be a great to open up a shop at Akureyri. After being here for couple of years our clientèle grew larger and stronger and every time we arrived we got such positive welcome from the locals! Couple of glasses and ideas started flying: "what if we just open up a store together?", Abba, Tóta's sister needed a job and she lives at Akureyri: "Abba, you could run it", "lets check out some free spaces", "what if we call it Sisters & Partners?"..
The ball started rolling and that very next day we had found a space and we measured it all.
On the way to Reykjavík we designed it on the phone mostly between cars, signed a lease in that following week and went to stock up on products. 3 weeks from the idea's inception, the store first opened it's doors, September 5th 2014 at Strandgata 9, in the heart of Akureyri, Iceland's largest town in the north.
Essentially the craft fair had huge influence on our company, and taking part in this great adventure led us to where we are today!
This year we will not be taking part, we can't be at two places at once sadly, but we welcome you all to check out our store, not a pop-up booth any more but hopefully a permanent location! We will be there with light refreshments, face paint for the kids. And to say thanks to the craft fair we encourage you to go and check it out and the admission bracelets you get at the fair will work as a 10% discount coupon at our store!
Here you can see images from past years craft fairs: This was 2010, that year we won a price for the best booth.
Here we have some images from the first time we participated in 2010. We won a price for the best booth and that was certainly an added treat!
Here we have 2011, a bit darker look:
In the year 2012 we went all romantic with a pastel look:
The year 2013 we took a little break and finally, the year 2014, the eventful year the style of the booth matched the style of our stores:
