One of the partners in "Sisters & Partners" is Börkur, that is Marías, my sister husband. He has a brother called Eiríkur and Eiríkur has a partner also which is Sunna Björk and I would like to tell you little bit about her now...
Sunna is a wonderful jazz singer and she released her first album, Biðukolla in 2014.
Us sisters absolutely love her album and have had it on reply on and off pretty much since we got it and we also play it in the store. It is a collection of a soft jazz, mostly Icelandic classic songs and we sell the CD in our stores as well as here on our on-line store.
She also lend us her songs when we made a little video about our company and that you can watch here:
Here is another sample of a full length song from her which is just lovely!
I sent Sunna couple of questions about herself and asked her to tell me little bit about her childhood, family, studies and the jazz of course!
I'm born in Reykjavík just 32 years ago. I grew up mainly in Hafnarfjörður but I also spent a lot of time at the country side with my cousin, loving nature and animals!
I have always been a bit of a butterfly and artistic. I never did things like others did and blossomed in arts and craft classes in school. I have also always loved music lessons and studied ballet, modern ballet and ballroom dancing for over 20+ years!
I then moved to Denmark with my family at the age of 14 and got hooked on the travel addiction. I have since lived in 6 different countries!
The interests were multiple and I for example studied photography in Florence, Italy for one year and have since worked as a singer and a photographer in Copenhagen and in Iceland.
I thrive best in social works and have for example spent a lot of time working in hospitals and in retirement homes. Some also refer to me as being a "story person" because I often tell the same stories many times, probably more for my pleasure than others!
I live for my children and couldn't think of my life without them!
Me and Eiríkur have two sons together: Rökkvi Frey 7 years old and Ísar Flóki 4 months!
A little bit about the music...
I started taking singing lessons at the age of 9 and finished my fourth year at FIH in 2004. Then I head of to the Netherlands where I studied jazz for 3 years.
My favourite musicians are Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, Beth Gibbons, Beck og Will Oldham just to name a few. There are so many more from all genres!
The album, Biðukolla, is the first album I release and it is some sort of an ode to the women in my life! My grandmothers and my mother all influenced me greatly in my music and these songs have all something to do with them in every other way!
Let's not forget the other artist on the album but I was so fortunate to be able to work with the cream of the crop: Kjartan Valdemarsson on piano and accordion, Birgir Bragason on base and Einar Scheving on drums.
It doesn't really get much better than that!!
Tell me a little about your Christmas..
I am not at all for the Christmas stress than often comes with Christmas and try to have a very slow and wonderful time with my hubby and boys. We are having our first Christmas this year being only the four of us and now it will be our time to make some traditions on our own.
We thank Sunna Björk for the interview and wish her and her family a wonderful and calm Christmas!
For you all readers we recommend this album wholeheartedly which is full of sweet and very relaxing jazz!
Create your own happiness!
