Krista Design has been making new Christmas mobiles every year now for a couple of years and more often than not she makes more than one version per year! You see, when they get a new idea it is difficult to postpone it to another year, especially when the designer "sleeps" with the maker.. they just make it right away!
The benefit of having your own local production for sure!
Here you can see the mobiles available and you can press the images to go to a shopping site here on our on-line store. They are of course also available in our stores!
I would like to tell you little bit about the process of making them. An idea is born and María draws the graphic or outlines in Illustrator. She then sends the file to Börkur, her husband and the maker, which opens the graphic up in a programme that the water jet cutter can read. He organizes all the pieces on a plate so the material is fully used, and for these ornaments they use aluminium plates.
When the machine starts cutting it is basically high intensity water with a little bit of sand. The reason for the tank to be filled with water is because the force of the water is so extreme that the water slows down the power until it reaches thick steel plates at the bottom of the tank that prevents the jet to go through the base of the machine itself!
The pieces are then released from the plate and all the edges are sanded and finished. It is then powder-coated, silk thread goes through the hole for hanging, packaged, labelled and driven to the stores.
The process can also be seen in the video here below from minute 6:26
The mobile ornaments don't have to be only for Christmas, many are suitable for the whole year around! They are available in our stores as well as here on-line. We do ask you to be timely before Christmas because they are becoming super popular especially due to their great price point!
