I must share with you couple of photos we took on our way around Snæfellsnes but a more appealing drive can hardly be found. Snæfellsnes is a peninsula situated to the west of Borgarfjörður, in western Iceland.
We spent a weekend at my parent’s summerhouse and took the “other way home”.
They drive is filled with photo-moments, all sorts of cute small towns; Grundafjörður, Ólafsvík, Hellissandur, Rif, Arnarstapi and Hellnar. And being the foodies that we are we stopped at several places on the way to enjoy hot dogs, ice-creams, refilled our snack supplies at every other drive through and the coffee limit was reached and passed!
The prices are very different at the restaurants and at some I must say I found it to crude, so travelling around Iceland try to look for the best prices. Sometimes it is totally worth it, especially if the surroundings, interior and details has been touched with love (you see that straight away) then I am totally willing to spend the buck. But too high of a “tourist price” I really feel put off.
Anyhow, after a meeting with some crazy arctic terns at “Rif”, (they pick your head if you get to close). We decided to go straight to Akranes to try a restaurant I had heard raves about. (I know, you’d expect us to be fully fed up at this point but this lovely Sunday our tummy’s seemed to be bottomless!) The restaurant is called “Gamla Kaupfélagið” which is a not necessarily the most attractive on the outside the interior was very cosy, the menu was especially desirable!
My older son had problems picking a dish to try so we ended up trying a few. My sister and I have this in common, we get “food jealous”, because someone might get a better dish! A great solution is to get everybody to order differently so we can try all the dishes, not exactly popular always but hey, give us some love! “Menu-greed” and “taste fetish”, those are some real symptoms you know!
The service was great, which we value greatly, the food was delish, (all the dishes) and the price was very reasonable, I can definitely recommend this place! Check out the restaurant here.
