I would like to introduce you to my friend Alda but we became dear friends when we were little girls playing in our neighbourhood in Hafnarfjörður.
She knocked on my door one time and asked if she could play with the girl that lived there and that day became the start of a yearlong friendship, well almost 40 years because apparently we are becoming grown-ups..
We used to play together all the time when we were growing up and we were kind of glued together! She is one year older then I am but we attended the same school.
I remember when we went to a summer camp together and the drama queen I am cried every evening from home sickness and she comforted me and was my statue the whole time!
She became an exchange student in USA and I remember I thought she we was so brave and adventurous! She got to know a whole new family there and talked about here american parents and american sister! I must admit I got a bit jealous really!
Soon it was time to attend college and our group of friends grew larger. I became a mum only 19 years old and became busy with changing diaper´s while she enjoyed a different life to mine.
She found her love and whoosh 3 children in a short time, they are now one year old, a three year old and a six year old!
I was so happy for her and admired her for “being bothered” in her thirties!!
Upbringing became her priority and herself and her health took second place like is so common with busy mothers, and I know that all too well myself! When I saw her again not so long ago in our store she was choosing new clothes because her older ones were now all too big! She told me that she had started working out and eating healthier and she looked so wonderful I hardly recognised her!
About ten years ago I turned my page myself and I completely connect to her experience! I decided to ask her a couple of questions about this great life change she had made because for me these kind of stores are such a motivation and probably for many others out there!
My sister and I asked her to come for a photo shoot in her new clothes and we are so happy for her and basically exploding with pride!
Why did you decide to change your lifestyle?
Well, I had become too fat. Up till now I have been quite brisk besides my weight but now I had started to avoid certain activities and felt it hurt my knee (an old sports wound). I thought that if I was going to enjoy my life with my family, something had to change!
Where did you get information about your new diet?
I signed myself up at Heilsuborg, a health centre here in Reykjavik but they specialise in getting healthy and an “all-around” change! They offer lessons, gym sessions, weigh-ins etc. and I got a very diverse schooling and I based on that I chose the road that suited me the best! But about my everyday diet I look at a lot of blogs to get new food ideas and I am very adventurous in the kitchen and love to try new things!
What advise can you give others that would like to change their diet?
Well I think it is different for everybody! It is important to find what suits each one and adjust this to each ones taste and need. I also believe it is important not to change everything at one, take smaller steps!
What it your favourite food?
This is a tough one, I love all food! But if I want to treat myself a nice steak would have to be high on that list!
What was the biggest change for you, diet wise?
The biggest change for me was to start eating regularly, especially at the beginning of each day which had been an up and down thing. Now I eat breakfast and lunch and avoid getting super hungry late afternoon and during the evenings! That was my most dangerous time and you don’t make the best decisions when you become so hungry!
Secondly I began noting what I was eating and for that I use a programme called MyFitnessPal. Then I started realising where my calories were coming from. I decided that nothing is off limits! But I choose to avoid certain things or consume them in smaller portions!
Are you exercising something that you would recommend?
I take my regular classes at Heilsuborg, three times a week. My husband and I have also began taking shorter and longer walks. Fort the shorter walks we have included our kids but we are also very lucky to have close friends and family members that can babysit. I love to be able to combine exercise and enjoying the outdoors into one and I really recommend that!
What would you say is the best thing about this changed lifestyle?
The best thing it this added energy. Things just get way simpler when the body is in better shape!
What was the hardest to get started with?
The hardest thing was to change old habits and make new ones! Change the way you think and get organised ahead! I think you tend to get stuck in a certain rut and often look for what is familiar and the easiest! This can be a challenge to overcome by itself!
Did to award yourself with anything when you did well?
I awarded myself regularly! I bought myself a new water bottle after the first 5 kg, then new gym clothes and so on. Now I am very close to my final goal and I went to Systur & Makar and bought myself some new clothes I had been longing for, for a while!
Did you set yourself some goals?
In the beginning I decided to set myself a goal that was completely health concerned not weight loss concerned, whereas this change has everything to do with better health! I set myself a goal to be down to 88cm in the waist before September. I reached that and then some and I am now 84cm in the waist, about 25cm gone! Next it is probably getting below 80 cm but we will see how that will go!
May I ask how many kg you lost, that is always a popular question!
Yes, I have lost 37 kg since January!
We thank our dear Alda for the talk and wish her the very best for the future!
